R.I.P. Laura Lynch, founding member of The Chicks

Laura Lynch, one of the founding members of The Chicks (formerly The Dixie Chicks), passed away in a car crash near El Paso, Texas, at the age of 65. TMZ reported her death, and her cousin Mark Lynch confirmed the news.

In 1989, Lynch, along with Robin Lynn Macy and sisters Martie and Emily Erwin, established the band. They began with bluegrass but later shifted to a more mainstream country style in their second album, “Little Ol’ Cowgirl.” Following this change, Macy left the group, making Lynch the solo lead singer for the third album, “Shouldn’t a Told You That.” Gaining a substantial audience took time for the trio. Lynch noted in 2003 that they gradually secured bookings for larger venues and eventually added Lloyd Maines to the group for a more robust sound.

Lloyd Maines, the father of the current Chicks lead singer, Natalie Maines, played a crucial role. Natalie, initially scouted as a replacement for Macy, eventually assumed Lynch’s position. Despite speculation about behind-the-scenes issues, Lynch and the group opted not to discuss them. Lynch expressed in 2003 that being replaced is always challenging, but she doesn’t regret leaving the group.

After departing from The Chicks, Lynch largely stayed out of the public eye. In a 2003 interview, she mentioned taking up oil painting and spending time with her husband, Mac Tull, and daughter. They both survive her.
